At Bakersfield, the other evening Mr. Gage criticized Judge Maguire for objecting to the bond issue on the ground that people would not only have to pay the principal, but would have to pay nearly as much more in interest. "Suppose," says Mr. Gage, "you should go to a bank and attempt to raise money for a term of years on unimpeachable security without offering interest. Would you get it"  He could hardly have expected the people to be ignorant of the fact that Maguire’s objection was to the proposition of borrowing money that was not needed, rather than to the proposition of paving interest on borrowed money. If Mr. Gage, with sufficient money in his pocket should go to the bank and borrow more, and pay interest on the loan, what would be thought of him? That was the position of the United States, and that is what Maguire objects to - Sun.

Republican Corporation papers insist that the sole object of the three parties fusing together and forming a union upon the most vital principles was done for the purpose of securing the offices. In one sense they are right. It was not only to get the offices but to keep the Republican defaulting rascals out, and they are going to succeed. Now let us reason together and determine if possible why the g.o.p. has fused with the Southern Pacific railroad, and all corporations of the earth and Kentucky ?Was it for self or pure patriotism? It was surely not for principle for they have none of that precious article left. If they ever had any they have exchanged it for corporate influence, under the management and direction of such cattle as Buckley, Gassen, etc. The so-called fusion or union ticket eminated from the desire of the people to protect themselves from further encroachments of the bosses and corporate greed.  - San Diego Vidette
